hellboy 2 non review

hellboy was about hellboy.

hellboy 2 was about guillermo de toro's imagination.

both are excellent movies, but i was disappointed by 2's lack of focus on... hellboy. 1 really was all about the main character, with great character development and romping adventure and wisecracks and so forth. 2 was a lot like pan's labyrinth: about bringing an exquisitely envisioned fantasy world to life. in 1, the villains were nazis, and not just nazis, but nazi mystics -- my favorite kind of nazi villains. #2 had great villains, and maybe a more poignant plot... but... it just wasn't as "fun".

in any case, hellboy 2 was my first visit to a theater in a really long time, and i'm glad i went.
